Why Aluminum Nitride Is a Leading Ceramic Substrate Material

2024 01/07

Aluminum Nitride (AlN) has emerged as a highly promising ceramic substrate material, particularly in the field of high-power LEDs and advanced electronics. Its key performance characteristics set it apart from traditional materials like alumina.

1. Exceptional Thermal Conductivity
AlN boasts a theoretical thermal conductivity of up to 320 W/(m·K)—8 to 10 times higher than alumina. Even in commercial applications, its conductivity can reach 200 W/(m·K), enabling efficient heat dissipation and improved LED performance.

2. Excellent Thermal Expansion Compatibility
With a low thermal expansion coefficient of 4.6 × 10⁻⁶/K, AlN closely matches that of common semiconductor materials like Si and GaAs. It also aligns well with GaN in terms of lattice structure. This compatibility supports reliable chip-to-substrate bonding in high-power LED manufacturing.

3. Superior Electrical Insulation
AlN has a wide bandgap of 6.2 eV, offering excellent electrical insulation. This eliminates the need for additional insulation treatment, simplifying production processes for power devices.

4. High Strength and Stability
With a wurtzite crystal structure and strong covalent bonding, AlN exhibits high hardness, strength, and mechanical reliability. It remains chemically stable at temperatures up to 1000°C in air and 1400°C in vacuum, making it suitable for high-temperature sintering and resistant to corrosion in further processing.
Performance parameter table of AlN structure parts
Thanks to these outstanding features—including high thermal conductivity, low density, good chemical stability, and thermal compatibility with silicon—AlN is widely recognized as one of the most promising ceramic substrates for future high-performance electronic applications.
